Seven Days In The Art World
“Im an artist, not a reader”, is something I say to explain my lack of motivation as a reader. Which is true, but I also know that an important part of an artists practice is gaining a toolkit of knowledge, which comes from consuming information. My professor recommended me this book after I told her that I didn’t know what I wanted to do with my degree post grad, and I didn’t know what was out there. This book does just that, describing various different aspects of the art world in an incredibly entertaining manner. Thornton narrates her dance through the mysterious and gatekept worlds, describing an auction house like a fantasy world and like the fan favorite book character. I truly enjoyed this book, and it made me understand the “art world” a whole lot better.

I’m incredibly upset that I didn’t get to see his work while I traveled Europe. His paintings on grief was a great inspiration for some of my recent paintings. People know him for “The Scream” but so many more of his paintings reflect a sense of mental anguish that you can feel through his colors and brush stroke.

One of my current contemporary inspirations! His use of line and color are captivating, there’s this one piece of his maybe I’ll post separately that combines bodies together and with elements of the surrounding world, there’s also incredible dialogue existing within his work.

Kristen is a painter and illustrator based in Salt Lake City. Her journey as an artist is nothing close to linear, but it’s inspiring to see her flourish as an artist and take on incredible opportunities. She’s candid about her work as an artist, gives advice to growing artists on making a living, and her candidity is just overall inspiring. She has a super calming voice and I love making art work along with her.
